Solutions for Heating Small Areas
For several years, we've been offering complete custom radiant floor heating packages to plumbers, contractors, and the average do-it-yourselfer. A majority of these projects fall into the 2,500 to 6,000 square foot range. For these, a high-efficiency hot water heat source in an open, closed or indirect radiant floor heating system makes a lot of sense. Smaller areas and those with lower heat loads may be better served by a different solution.
We offer several alternatives for these situations - closed-loop small electric boilers, open or indirect on-demand water heaters, and "Tankits" for traditional water heaters.
For the smallest spaces (300 sq.ft. or less), an electric floor heating system is an ideal solution. Typically, retrofitted into bathrooms, kitchens or room additions, electric floor heating comes in very thin rolls that can be conveniently installed under tile, stone, wood or carpet.

Closed, Open and Indirect Systems
For those in-between projects or where electric mats are not feasible, we have several hydronic or water based alternatives for you to consider.
Let's quickly define the three types of radiant floor heating systems:
An Open Radiant Floor Heating System just indicates that the water in the radiant floor heating system freely mingles with the domestic hot water. This is prohibited by code in many areas and requires the use of PEX tubing approved for potable water as well as all stainless or bronze components (they don't rust).
An Indirect Radiant Floor Heating System would separate the domestic hot water from the radiant system by way of a heat exchanger while still allowing a single heat source to supply both domestic and radiant heat water.
A Closed Radiant Floor Heating System would only heat the radiant system and you´d need a separate heat source for domestic hot water.
"Tankits" for Tank Style Water Heaters
Whether natural gas, propane or electric; traditional tank style water heaters have been used by do-it-yourselfers for many years as a low-cost way to heat small spaces with small heat loads. In considering this option, it is imperative that you know whether your local code alllows for such an application and whether the manufacturer will warranty the heater when used this way. We have found that it is more cost effective for customers to source the hot water heater themselves rather than to have us buy it, mark it up and ship it.What we can provide are pre-assembled kits that can convert your tank into an open or closed radiant floor heating source. Following are some our of standard "tankit" assemblies. Of course, in addition to the tankits shown we can supply your system components - PEX tubing, pumps, contols, manifolds, etc.

Closed system "Tankit" for Separate Manifold Connection
$250.00
$125 to add backflow preventer and fill valve for "makeup" water line
Our Tankits are most often built in the form of a closed system. An example is pictured to the right. Everything is pre-assembled. You only need to attach the assemblies to your water heater supply and return lines and thread the expansion tank into the bushing provided.
The "Closed Tankit" includes the following items:
- Expansion tank
- Float vent
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Two drain valves for filling and purging the system
- Two ball valves for isolating the water tank from the radiant system
- 3/4" brass union fittings for connecting to the tank
- 3/4" Sharkbite fittings for connecting via PEX or copper to your manifold

Open System "Tankit" for Separate Manifold Connection
$210.00
$65 to add large potable water expansion tank;
Some people prefer to run an open system where the water for the radiant floor heating system and potable water for domestic use mix together. This system type should only be installed where code allows and you are informed about potential health risks. Only components approved for potable water use can be used in the rest of the system. With those words of caution, an open system can be a very cost effective way to use your domestic water heater to heat small spaces.
The "Open Tankit" includes the following items:
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Two ball valves for isolating the water tank from heating system
- Two drain valves for filling and purging the system
- 3/4" brass union fittings for connecting to the tank
- 3/4" copper sweat connections to cold water inlet and domestic hot supply
- 3/4" Sharkbite fitting for connecting via PEX or copper to
- Check valve
- *a 2nd check valve may be necessary ($30) if your heat system pump does not have one built-in
