These days there are lots of on-line sellers of radiant heating equipment. How does the average customer sort through the choices to find a supplier that will provide the best value for their money? Of course competitive pricing is important to any purchase decision. However, there are a number of other factors that if not done well can make the price paid for the radiant floor heating system seem trivial.
Factors such as:
- completeness
- ease of installation
- quality of products
- knowledge and expertise of the supplier
- as well as their support commitment after the system is installed
are as important as price in determining the value received. Many "price competitive" sellers of radiant heating supplies provide little or no value beyond low price. We have had a number of people approach us for help in finishing or fixing a system that was started after receiving a good deal on some parts elsewhere. Sometimes it is relatively easy to step in and finish the system or clean up the mess. Other times, it takes a lot longer and/or ends with a less than ideal completed system.
We strongly encourage people to remember that in the end they will have a radiant heating system. There is a good chance that if they approach it as a complete system, where the components are chosen because of how they work with the other parts, and the designer/supplier knows the components, the result will meet the high expectations people have about radiant heat. On the other hand, approaching the system with the idea that it is a collection of parts procured on a piecemeal basis increases the likelihood that the result will fall short of expectations. And, when there are problems, it is often difficult to sort through them as the design and components may have come from different places.
Even on-line companies touting themselves as designers and suppliers of complete radiant floor heating systems often leave a customer wanting in terms of the level of assembly/integration, instruction and support they provide. They ship a "box of parts" or provide some minimal level of assembly leaving the customer with significant of work and room for error in getting the system put together.
